Tournament at Robert E Lee High School, September 24

The PVI Options soccer team played a tournament this past weekend at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield.  In the first game of the double header, the Panthers played a spirited and athletic team from Alexandria. PVI opened the scoring with an early goal from Junior, McKenna Loftus assisted by Emily Duffy.  Alexandria pressed the Panthers often and retaliated with a goal of their own late in the first half.  Anthony DeNoyior was efficient in goal and smothering defensive play from seniors,Tommy Ngo and Shaylyn Smith denied Alexandria additional opportunities to score. Tyler O’Hara put the Panthers back in the lead in the second half with a nice break away goal with an assist from Olivia Baker.  Tyler scored again late with assists from Wes Bolil and Zack Fowler.  Alexandria scored late but the Panthers held on for a 3-2 win.  The second game pitted the Panthers against a physical team from McLean.  Once again Junior, Tyler O’Hara took charge of the offense and opened the game with a breakaway goal with a fine assist from Conner Andahl.  PVI stepped up its defense despite the physical play as Emma Earhardt, Shaylyn Smith and Wes Bolil kept McLean away from the net.  Tyler added a late goal with an assist from Zack Fowler and Anthony DeNoyior registered his first shutout in goal as PVI won again, 2-0.

Opening Day - September 10

Options soccer opened their season with two games on Saturday, September 10th, at West Potomac High in Alexandria.  In the opener, the Panthers faced both the Fantastics from Fairfax and 100 degree temperatures on the field.  Goals from Senior Shaylyn Smith and Sophomore Emily Duffy put the Panthers ahead early.  Good defense from Emma Erhardt, McKenna Loftus, Tommy Ngo and Connor Andahl kept the Fantastics on their heels and in the PVI zone much of the first half.  Second half goals from Tommy Ngo, Wes Bolil and Shaylyn Smith coupled with stout goalkeeping from Anthony DeNoyior, Zack Fowler and Tyler O'Hara sealed the 5-0 win for the Panthers.  In the second game PVI faced the George Mason Pride and PVI alumni Caroline Tacogue and Meredith Cripe.  Despite the sweltering heat, the Panthers again were strong offensively as goals from Shaylyn and Anthony put PVI up early.  Mason responded with a quick goal but Olivia Baker answered with a goal of her own.  A late goal from Conner Andahl finished the scoring and the Panthers won their second game of the day 4-1, and earned a well-deserved rest.  The Panthers will play their next tournament at Lee High School in Springfield on September 24th.
