PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PVI basketball competes in two athletic leagues: The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA). The WCAC comprises of top Catholic High Schools from Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia region and widely regarded as the most competitive high school basketball conference in the country. The VISAA is the leading independent high school league in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Lady Panthers had an outstanding 2016-17 season with a won-loss record of 32-2. They won the VISAA Division I state championship and were crowned Destin (FL) Holiday Classic Tournament Champion. At season’s end, ESPN and USA Today ranked PVI third in the country and MaxPreps ranked them number one in Virginia.

The 2017 VISAA Division I state championship was the 11th straight title for the Lady Panthers, setting a national high school record, and their 18th state championship in 23 years. Few high schools in the country have matched the success of PVI over the last four years. The Lady Panthers won-loss record is a remarkable 126-10 and that includes four VISAA Division I state championships, three WCAC Championships, three national-level holiday tournament championships and ending each season nationally ranked.

The girls' basketball program has three teams: varsity, junior varsity (JV) and freshmen. The JV team won the 2017 WCAC championship for a 4th consecutive year with an impressive 19-1 record.  Over the last four seasons, the JV team amassed a remarkable 79-3 record. The freshmen team had a 9-10 record last season with a solid 51-23 record the last four seasons.

Scott Allen leads the girls’ basketball program and joined PVI in 2002. He was selected ALL-USA Girls Basketball Coach of the Year by USA Today in 2016 and a year earlier awarded the prestigious 2015 Pat Summitt Trophy as the National Coach of the Year by the Women’s Coaches Basketball Association.  Allen was also named WCAC Coach of the Year twice, Washington Post coach of the year and selected VISAA Virginia State girls’ basketball coach of the year an unprecedented eight times.

Coach Allen teaches that a true champion excels in the classroom and on the basketball court. The program takes great pride in having a large number of student athletes on the honor roll.  During the 2016-17 school year, the team’s cumulative grade point average exceeded 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Since joining PVI, more than 21 PVI players from Coach Allen teams have played basketball in college and all of his players have pursued academic studies at the collegiate level.

PROGRAM PHILOSPHY

Girls’ basketball is one of 27 athletic programs at PVI and helps to fulfill the school’s mission of graduating responsible, moral, service-oriented young adults who will continue to grow in grace and wisdom. The program is committed to helping student athletes achieve their academic and athletic potential. Basketball, like all sports and extracurricular activities, enriches the high school learning experience and teaches important life skills. Student athletes learn firsthand that outstanding preparation delivers outstanding results.  Players who achieve academic excellence become accomplished athletes and ultimately succeed in college and beyond.
